I’m often asked, “how did you get started?” And the honest answer is I took a crazy, leap of faith. At the age of 24, in the midst of planning my wedding and building a home, I quit my secure, great paying corporate job in the pursuit of happiness! Boy, was that the dumbest, smartest decision I've ever made!
Outside of planning weddings/events for family and friends, I had some corporate planning experience through the Fortune 100 company I worked for, but nothing that someone would up and quit their job to pursue. I mean, I did have extensive floral design experience and knowledge, so that would come in handy. But let's be real, that's not the same thing as running a company. Despite the odds that were against me, I knew I couldn't continue to dread going to work every day. I couldn't keep this job just because the money was good. If I learned nothing else in college, I learned to do what I love, and only good things will follow. So, I started putting the company together in late 2006, got certified in wedding planning, and put in my two weeks notice in early 2007, and K. Barner Events was born. Technically, it started out as Pure Ambiance Event Planning & Consulting, but let's not drag this story out longer than it needs to be haha ;-)
It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be but I was as happy as a pig in you know what, so I pushed through the hard times and focused on making our clients happy and designing events that reflected them, wholeheartedly.
I was blessed to gain loyal, dedicated, event-loving, members of my Team in 2008 and 2009 and those ladies are still with me to this day - Samantha, Megan, Tomyka, & Kaitlyn! Belinda and Kim didn't take too long to follow. These ladies have helped me get K. Barner Events to where it is today, and I could not have done it without them. My hubby, Michael, who we jokingly but seriously call the "Creative Director," has been an unbelievable contributor and support system. My babies, Julian, Jaylen, and Niyla, are always there with big hugs and kisses after a busy day.
In late 2016, after years of debating, I decided to rebrand in 2017 and change the company name to K. Barner Events. The timing somehow lined up perfectly - it was our 10th year - it felt right.
During all these years, we've accomplished so much. We have produced a wedding on the private island of Lana'i, Hawaii, won The Knot Hall of Fame Best of Awards, planned the wedding of NFL Wide Receiver for the Jets, Quincy Enunwa, to his love, Deanna, planned MLB World Series and Golden Glove recipient, Joe Panik, to his high school sweetheart, Brittany. We have planned events that have included many other celebrities such as Kevin Hart, Rev Run, Terrance J, Bebe Winans, and countless others. We've planned two of The Knot's industry parties and designed their loft for Bridal New York Fashion Week. We have planned an 850 person corporate event for Goya, along with other galas. I have contributed to numerous "expert advice" articles in various magazines and have had our work featured in various publications as well.
Reflecting back, I think of that crazy leap of faith I took. I reflect on how much joy I feel when I see my couples have their first dance. How much excitement I feel when I see our gorgeous design plan become a stunning reality. I think of the countless thank you’s from our couples throughout the night, the "thank you again," "couldn't have done it without you," texts the morning after. I'm grateful for the many brides who I now call friends. All of this and more, lets me know that leap of faith was totally worth it! I am so grateful and proud of all of our accomplishments, but I know the best is still yet to come! After all, I absolutely LOVE what I do!!
